New procedures in school

P3 b Assembly : R.L.S.

It  was lovely to see so many parents at the P3 assembly this morning. The pupils recited  poems and sang a song from  Robert.L.Stevenson as well as  treating us  to a slide show of their fantastic pirates costumes. The boys and girls put in to practice their Curriculum for Excellence by performing to an audience ( Confident Individual ) as well as demonstrating good Listening and Talking skills. Well done P3b.

A calendar of future assemblies will be posted shortly and we do hope that many more of you can join us here at school and share in your child’s  learning.

Emergency Evacuation:

I have recently taken part in a number  of training events for senior leaders across the City of Edinburgh Council’s schools.  We at SMPS are reviewing our safety and security procedures and as such we will be carrying out an emergency evacuation exercise in early December to risk assess against our current procedure. Be reassured that this is  part of a wider evaluation of risk assessments  across all of our SMPS sites and for no other reason.

The planned evacuation process will involve children leaving the classrooms with their belongings and decanting in an orderly fashion to our muster points in the playground.  However, for this exercise only, we will register in the school playground before returning to class and will not continue the decant to our other pre-determined locations.

However, as winter approaches it also reminds us that in the unlikely event of having to close the school due to  winter weather etc, the procedure remains the same as before  with children  relocating  to Deanbank  annex ( P1 + P2) and St Peter’s R.C. Primary School where we have access to our registration systems and to telephones if the children are required to be sent home.

I am pleased to say that our  new security system is now fully operational and when  in and around  the school you will have noticed  unidentified vistors being challenged by  members of staff. All CEC staff will be wearing easily identifiable red badges and authorised visitors black passes. Please remember that you are permitted ONLY to enter the school through the main office door. If appropriate you will be issued with a black pass to wear during  your visit.  Please do  not enter through the After School Club or toilet doors.

New arrangements for appointments:

For medical and other appointments  you are now required to collect your child from the school office where we have a  sign-out and sign-in sheet. This keeps our class registers up to date in the event of any emergency such as fire.
