APPLYING FOR A P1 PLACE

The school will hold an enrolment day for new P1s due to start in August 2018 on November 9th 2017. Enrolement will take place at the South Morningside Infant School (‘Deanbank’, 35 Canaan Ln, EH10 4SG)  between the hours of 9:15 – 11:30 and 1:30 – 2:45. On the day, parents need to bring along their council-tax bill and a utility bill showing that the family reside within catchment address. (In Edinburgh, families have to register at their ‘catchment’ school). For more information please click here.

To save time you may choose to download the enrolment form here and bring it along on the day, or you will be given one to fill during your visit to the school on November 10th.

After the enrolment day in November the school can take P1 registrations up until the end of February 2018. If you are resident within the school’s catchment area by this date please come in to the main school on Comiston Road along with the following documents and we will ask you to complete an application form for your child.

* Child’s birth certificate

* Council Tax Demand Notice for the current year, in the parent’s name

* A utility bill (i.e. gas, electricity, landline telephone or broadband) in the parent’s name and dated within the last 6 months

If you move to the area after the 28 February 2017 then you would need to get in touch with School Placements at the City of Edinburgh Council. There is further information on the document which can be downloaded here.

“The Council aims to provide places for P1 and S1 pupils at their catchment school if they are living in the catchment area by the end of November of the year before the start in P1 and S1.”

APPLYING FOR A PLACE FOR P2 THROUGH TO P7

The school office will be able to advise on the availability of spaces in each year group. There is both a catchment and out of catchment waiting list for most year groups and a pupil’s placement on the waiting list is normally determined by date of receipt of the application in the following categories of priority:

Catchment

1. Exceptional cases

2. pupils with siblings in attendance at the requested school

3. pupils who are resident within the City of Edinburgh area and who do not have brothers/sisters currently in attendance at the requested school

4. pupils who are not resident within the City of Edinburgh Council area who do not have brothers/sisters currently attending the requested school.

Non-catchment

1. Exceptional cases

2. pupils with siblings in attendance at the requested school

3. pupils who are resident within the City of Edinburgh Council area and who do not have brothers/sisters currently in attendance at the requested school

4. pupils who are not resident within the City of Edinburgh Council area who do not have brothers/sisters currently attending the requested school

If there is a place available in the year group then a place can be offered if the child and family are resident within the city and can provide the proof documents as per the list below.

If the family are moving into the area, but not yet resident in the city, and there are spaces available, then places can be provisionally held for up to 3 months in advance of a move on production of purchase missives or a new lease agreement. All proof documents would then need to be provided before the catchment place could be offered and before the pupil could start school. Please note places can only be reserved for pupils moving into the catchment area. We are unable to reserve places for out of catchment applications.

If there are no spaces then we would add the pupil’s details to our waiting list and the family would need to contact other schools in the area.

Proof documents required before a catchment place can be offered:

  • Completed application form
  • Child’s birth certificate
  • The purchase missives for new property/new lease agreement
  • New council tax notice (this can be set up a fortnight in advance of the move, so there is a greater chance that the parent can receive the notice as soon after their move as possible)
  • New utility bill (a welcome/start up utility letter will be fine)
  • Proof of termination of lease/proof of sale for previous property (if moving between districts in Edinburgh or from a commutable distance.)

Cases where there is one parent living in Edinburgh but the child is arriving down the line or families who are going to be moving in with other family or friends, will only be considered once the whole family is residing in the property and all proofs provided. Proofs required in this case would be:

* The council tax notice for the property (will be in householder’s name but shouldn’t be single occupancy discount and the property should be big enough)

* The parent’s current child tax credits notice/child benefit letter addressed to the new address

* The parent’s driving licence registered at the new address

* Proof of termination of lease/proof of sale for previous property (if moving between districts in Edinburgh or from a commutable distance. This is even more necessary now to tighten up on potential fraud)

Protocol for the Admissions of Overseas Pupils

Placing requests for a child residing outwith the UK cannot be processed until the child is residing in the UK. Catchment places cannot be granted until the child is resident in the catchment area.

MOVING INTO THE CATCHMENT AREA DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

If you have moved into the catchment area for the school during the holidays and have a copy of the signed missives or the signed lease then please email the missives/signed lease, along with a completed application form and scan of your child’s birth certificate to the school email (admin@southmorningside.edin.sch.uk).

All emails will be dealt with in date receipt order, and will be responded to during the first week back of term. There is no guarantee of a place (some year groups are full and we have waiting lists). We will be able to advise when we return after the holidays if there are any spaces.
